Form Revisions Background The last time the IRS revised Form W-9 was in October 2018. The earliest to take effect would be October 2023, meaning latest date to adopt would be May 1, 2024. The IRS published new instructions December 2023.
The W-9 is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form in which a taxpayer provides their correct taxpayer identification number (TIN) to an individual or entity (Form W-9 requester) who is required to file an information return to report the amount paid to a payee, or other amount reportable on an information return.
In brief. What happened? The IRS recently released a revised version (dated March 2024) of Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification, and Instructions for the Requester of Form W-9.

The 2024 Form W-9 includes a new checkbox certification to be used when the payer receiving the W-9 is a flow-through entity and the payee furnishing the form has an ownership interest in the payer entity and has foreign partners, owners or beneficiaries.
