Initial certification of EMT-Bs in the state of Vermont requires graduation from an approved course following the National Standard Curriculum and the passing of the National Registry Exam (NREMT).
First responders typically include law enforcement officers (commonly known as police officers), emergency medical services members (such as EMTs or paramedics), fire service members (such as firefighters, search and rescue members, technical/heavy rescue members, etc) and Public Works employees such as Heavy Equipment
Basic Life Support (BLS) The BLS program content includes single- and multiple-responder scenarios and AED use, as well as how to care for a patient who has an obstructed airway. Skills include high-quality CPR and AED use, obstructed airway and BLS team response.
As seen in the graphic below, EMS operates at the crossroads of healthcare, public health, emergency management and public safety. The principles and resources of each field are employed in EMS systems.
Aspiring first responders enroll in at least one training program before pursuing certification. You can train for three different levels of first response: EMT basic, EMT paramedic and EMT intermediate. Instructors teach each training program at community colleges, technical academies and vocational schools.
