Sarah R. Pendleton was sworn in to office as the Washington Supreme Court Clerk on February 11, 2025. She is the 12th Clerk in state history, and as an Asian American, will be the first person of color to serve in the role. Sarah joined the Court in July 2021 as deputy Supreme Court clerk.
Instead of personal service, the Notice can be sent to the defendant by registered or certified mail. If the Notice is mailed, a return receipt with the signature of the party being served must be filed with the court. The defendant must be served the Notice at least ten calendar days before the scheduled hearing.

To respond to the lawsuit, fill out an answer and appearance form. Next, complete the certificate of service form. Then, file your forms with the court within 20 days of receiving the summons. Finally, deliver your completed paperwork to the plaintiff (the person suing you).
The filing fee will be either $35 or $50 depending on whether the county in which you file the lawsuit supports a dispute resolution center.
