Western Illinois University was founded on April 24, 1899. The land for the university was donated by Macombs Freemasons (Illinois Lodge #17). Macomb was in direct competition with Quincy, Aledo, Monmouth, La Harpe, and Rushville, as candidates for the site of a western university.
In 1857, Illinois State Normal University (ISNU) was founded as a normal school for the purpose of training teachers to work in Illinois schools. The institution later evolved into a teachers college and finally into the liberal arts university it is today.

History. ISU was founded in 1857, the same year Illinois first Board of Education was convened and two years after the Free School Act was passed by the state legislature. Among its supporters were judge and future Supreme Court Justice, David Davis and local businessman and land holder Jesse W.
The state approved the change to Illinois State University at Normal in summer 1963, effective January 1, 1964. The name became Illinois State University in 1967. In 1966, the Illinois Board of Higher Education formally recognized the school as a multipurpose developing liberal arts university.
