CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team. Members are all volunteers who play a role in supporting professional first responders. CERTs teach people about how to prepare for disasters that can happen in their communities.
Anyone with first aid/CPR training can also be a first responder, but the scope of practice is far more limited than EMT or paramedic training.
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT form) During a large-scale disaster, the response of any communitys emergency services may be delayed or overwhelmed for a variety of reasons.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
The CERT concept differs because it includes nonmilitary emergencies, and is coordinated with all levels of emergency authorities, local to national, via an overarching incident command system. In 2022, the CERT program moved under FEMAs community preparedness umbrella along with the Youth Preparedness Council.
