Permissive service credit You may be eligible to purchase service credit for: Creditable service performed part-time or as a substitute teacher in the California public school system before you were a CalSTRS member or between refunding and becoming a CalSTRS member again.
If you are a part-time, substitute or temporary employee performing creditable service in the California public school system, you can choose to belong to the Defined Benefit Program or an alternative program offered by your employer, such as the Cash Balance Benefit Program.
CalSTRS Defined Benefit Program is a traditional defined benefit plan that provides retirement, survivor and disability benefits. Your Defined Benefit retirement benefit is based on a formula set by law using your age, service credit and final compensation.
The retirement incentive benefit of two years of service credit is provided to eligible Defined Benefit Program members by participating school districts, community college districts, and county offices of education when the employers governing board takes formal action to provide the benefit to all of its employees
A permissive election of membership in the Defined Benefit Program is irrevocable and applies to all future creditable service performed for the same or another employer unless an election for coverage by the CalSTRS Cash Balance Benefit Program or California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) is made for

You earn service credit for each year or partial year you work for a CalPERS-covered employer. It accumulates on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30) and is one of the factors we use to calculate your future retirement benefits.
