The Clean Energy Systems Exemption offered by New York State Real Property Tax Law (RPTL) Section 487 encourages the installation of certain energy systems in residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial applications, including solar, wind, and energy storage, among other eligible technologies.

Exemption applications must be filed with your local assessors office. See our Municipal Profiles for your local assessors mailing address. Do not file any exemption applications with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance or with the Office of Real Property Tax Services.
At the end of 2025, the historically high gift, estate, and generation-skipping exemption levels of $13.99 million per person (as of 2025), were slated to revert to the pre-2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act levels (TCJA) of $5 million per person (plus annual inflation adjustments) due to the sunset provisions of the TCJA.
