In ance with AR 601-280, Army Retention, and higher headquarters guidance, only those Soldiers who have maintained a record of acceptable performance will be allowed the privilege of reenlisting within the active army or transferring/enlisting into the reserve component.
If a Soldier is coming up on their ETS, they are blocked from reenlisting unless the bar is lifted. If a bar to reenlistment is in place when a Soldier ETSs, they will be given an Honorable Discharge.
Generally, once youve reenlisted in the U.S. military, its considered a binding commitment, and unilaterally getting out of it can be challenging. If youve signed a reenlistment contract and wish to back out of it before your original ETS (Expiration Term of Service), your options may be limited.

Once approved, only the approving commander or a higher commander may remove the bar. If the bar remains, the bar will again be reviewed at the end of another 3 months. If at that time the bar is not lifted, the command must initiate involuntary separation proceedings.
