Those selected for the U.S. Navy Band are advanced to the paygrade of E-6 (musician 1st class) following recruit training, under a contract for permanent duty with the U.S. Navy Band. Fleet Band High school graduates accepted as a fleet musician are authorized enlistment at paygrade E-2.
A majority of our musicians have at least a bachelors degree. In other career fields this would make them eligible to serve as a Commissioned Officer. However, due to the structure of our bands, the instrumentalists are enlisted and the conductor of the band is either a Commissioned Officer or a Warrant Officer.
a. Transmission Method. Requests to Navy Personnel Command (NAVPERSCOM), Enlisted Distribution and Readiness Branch (PERS- 40) or Reserve Personnel Management Division (PERS-913) can be submitted via , mail or encrypted e-mail to the cognizant NAVPERSCOM assignment desk.
Positions in the music field are very limited, and qualified applicants must demonstrate a high level of musical skill and knowledge prior to being accepted. Applicants must also pass an official audition and meet all qualifications for enlistment in the Navy.
Waivers may be obtained by submitting a request to PERS-913 via the Navy Reserve Recruiting Command.
