The 1974 hospital was replaced with the current hospital in 2014. The site of the original Naval Hospital Santa Margarita Ranch is now: Lake ONeill Campground, Camp Pendleton Youth Sports, ONeill Fitness Center, Wounded Warrior Battalion West and the Camp Pendleton Fire Department Station 4.
The Walter Reed Army Medical Center closed in 2011. By Act of Congress, the hospital was merged with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and was redesignated The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The hospital was closed in 1996 and neighbouring Louise Margaret Hospital (LMH) in 1995. With the exception of the former Guard Room (Building 16A) all the buildings are currently unoccupied.
Demolition of the hospital began in January 2013 after its services were transitioned to the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in 2010. In August 1965, facilities at Great Lakes were used as a morgue in the aftermath of the crash of United Airlines Flight 389.
Formerly known as U.S. Army Hospital Ryukyu Islands, the 250,000-square-foot building held 700 beds during the height of the Vietnam War. Shortly before it closed in March 2013, the hospital each day provided more than 500 women with obstetric and gynecological care.
