The 2024 National History Day theme is Turning Points in History. Each year the National History Day office selects a broad theme for the History Day contest.
When choosing a topic for your NHD project, here are some questions to consider: What are some subjects youre interested in? You can research any type of history for your project: Civil Rights history, sports history, history of science and engineering, music history, military history, etc.
Formatting of Written Materials: All NHD entries must include written materials presented in the following order: (1) title page, (2) process paper, and (3) annotated bibliography. Students must print written materials on plain white 8.5 x 11-inch paper, with 1-inch margins on all sides, in 12-point font.
The awards for first, second, and third place at the national level are $1000, $500, and $250, respectively. Outstanding Entry awards are also given to two projects from each state: one junior entry and one senior entry. There are also more than a dozen special prizes awarded worth between $250 and $10,000.

NHD projects must do more than just tell a story. Historians create a historical argument to state what they will prove through their writing. The historical argument is a clear and specific two or three-sentence statement that contains the how and why of what historians found in their research.
Turning Points in History This years theme invites you to consider questions of time and place, cause and effect, change over time, and impact and significance.
