Reduced Vehicle Tax Rate for Qualifying Disabled Veterans The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopted a lower Vehicle Tax rate of $0.01 per $100 of assessed value on one motor vehicle owned and regularly used by a qualifying disabled veteran in ance with the Code of Virginia 58.1-3506(A)(19).
Virginia code allows for localities to provide a Lower Personal Property Tax rate to Disabled Veterans on one motor vehicle (passenger car, pickup or panel truck) which they own (not lease). In ance with state law, the Lower Rate for which one may be eligible is determined by legal ownership of the property.
Disabled veterans who have suffered a service-related disability are eligible for one free registration (emissions fee must be paid, if applicable) and the plate fee is waived. This plate is NOT a disabled plate or placard. However, those are currently available to veterans as well.
To apply for a SUT exemption, veterans or spouses must submit the following to DMV: Vehicle title. Completed Purchasers Statement of Exemption. Benefit Summary letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs stating the veteran has a 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability.
The tax rate for most vehicles is $4.57 per $100 of assessed value. For properties included in a special subclass, the tax rate is $0.01 per $100 of assessed value. This special subclass includes the following: privately-owned vans used for van pools.
