The Miami, Shawnee, Wyandot, Delaware, Ottawa, Mingo, Seneca, Cherokee and many other tribes hunted on this large tract of land. The first known villages appeared in Logan County during the 1760s and 1770s. There were anywhere from 12 to 15 Indian towns here. Most of these villages belonged to the Shawnee Nation.
On August 5, 1890, voters selected Logan as the county name in honor of U.S. Sen. John A. Logan. Guthrie, designated as the county seat and the capital of Oklahoma Territory, was also the state capital from 1907 to 1910.
Logan County is located in west central Ohio and is named after Benjamin Logan (ca. 1742-1802) who fought Native Americans in the area. The county was formed in 1818 with territory taken from the northern portion of Champaign County.
Established in 1816, the small town of Logan, Ohio in the Hocking Hills grew slowly since its location isolated it from many major cities.
