The Self-Select PIN allows taxpayers to electronically sign their e-file return by entering a five-digit PIN into the tax software. The PIN is any five numbers taxpayers choose to enter as their electronic signature. (Volunteers may suggest taxpayers use their ZIP code.) The number cannot be all zeros.
If you are required to provide an IP PIN when e-filing your federal tax return, the IRS should have sent you a notice CP01A with your IP PIN for the current tax year. The IP PIN is not the same as the electronic filing PIN that you may have set when e-filing your return.
To enter your ERO Practitioner Pin: From the Tools menu, select Options. From the left side of the screen select Firm/Preparer Info. In the Preparer / Electronic Return Originator (ERO) Information youll see the ERO Practitioner PIN. Enter any 5 digits of your choice to act as your electronic signature. Click OK.
If you didnt create an e-file PIN last year or dont know your PIN, you can elect to use your prior year Adjusted Gross Income, or AGI, instead of your E-file PIN. Your prior year Self-Select PIN is entered during the E-file process and used as your signature when electronically filing.
To get an IP PIN that is lost, forgotten, or never arrived in a CP01A Notice, use the IP PIN request portal at IRS.gov. If you cant access your IP PIN online, call (800) 908-4490 for help getting your IP PIN reissued. Dont file your tax return without your IP PIN.

There is not a way to retrieve the 5 digit self-select PIN that you used to electronically sign your return. You will need to enter your 2023 AGI in order to verify your identity if you do not know the PIN number. If you used TurboTax to file your 2023 return, then the AGI number should be filled in automatically.
The fastest way to receive an IP PIN is to request one through your Online Account. If you dont already have an account on IRS.gov, you must register to validate your identity. Spouses and dependents are eligible for an IP PIN if they can pass the identity verification process.
