Austin led the army to present day San Antonio and moved the Texian and Tejano volunteers to the Alamo. He was then relocated to New Orleans where he served as Texas commissioner. After this bitter defeat, Austins troops surprised the Mexicans and defeated them in 18 minutes at the Battle of San Jacinto.
In 1837, settlers founded the village of Waterloo on the banks of the Colorado River, the first permanent settlement in the area. By 1839, Waterloo would adopt the name Austin and the frontier town would become the capital of the Republic of Texas. The City is named for Stephen F. Austin, the Father of Texas.
In 1839, the site was chosen, and briefly incorporated under the name Waterloo. Shortly afterward, the name was changed to Austin in honor of Stephen F. Austin, the Father of Texas and the republics first secretary of state.
A bill previously passed by Congress in May, 1838, specified that any site selected as the new capital would be named Austin, after the late Stephen F. Austin; hence Waterloo upon selection as the capital was renamed Austin. The first lots in Austin went on sale August 1839.
Rundberg. Situated in North Austin, Rundberg has long been considered one of the bad parts of Austin. Despite city-led initiatives to revitalize the area, Rundberg continues to grapple with crime, particularly drug-related incidents and property crimes.
