An ORV is a motor-driven, off-road recreational vehicle capable of cross-country travel without benefit of a road or trail. It may travel on land, snow, ice, marsh, swampland, or other natural terrain.
An ORV license is required to ride eligible county roads, frozen surface of public waters, state forest roads and eligible national forest roads; the cost is $26.25. An additional ORV trail permit, which is $10, is required on top of the ORV license when operating on state-designated ORV trails and scramble areas.
ORV helmet law ORV operators and passengers must wear a USDOT-approved crash helmet. This requirement is not to be confused with Michigans sometimes confusing motorcycle helmet law, which allows for certain motorcyclists meeting particular requirements to ride without a helmet.
ORV Requirements For any township open to ORV use on public roadways, a Michigan ORV sticker is required to be visible and affixed on the rear of the machine. A trail permit is not required for use on public roadways. ORVs cannot operate on any U.S. Forrest Service roadways or lands.
An ROV is a Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle and is designed specifically for recreational use rather than construction, farm or other utility use. An ROV is also commonly referred to as a Side-by-Side, a Recreational Utility Vehicle (RUV), or a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV).
