There are two main types of landfill in general. 2.1) SANITARY LANDFILL, is suitable for non-hazardous solid waste and municipal solid waste. 2.2) SECURE LANDFILL, is suitable for industrial and hazardous solid waste which are pretreated to the stabilization and solidification stage before entering the landfill.
In other words, the waste sent to landfills is a combination of organic waste from households, as well as waste from the commercial sector, and from construction sites. Landfills are the final destination for an enormous amount of waste that is not recycled, composted, reused or repurposed.
A common method of disposal by companies and customers is by sending a product to landfill, however, some products may need to be incinerated for safe disposal. In other cases, the end use of a product may not include disposal, but involve its extended use.
This means that only non-hazardous waste can be accepted including: Municipal Solid Waste. Non-hazardous household and commercial refuse. Appliances. Tires. Construction and Demolition Materials. Clean Dirt. Clean Asphalt/Concrete. Mixed Inerts. Woodwaste and Greenwaste.
Solid waste must be tested for liquids before entering the landfill. This is done by passing samples of the waste through standard paint filters. If no liquid comes through the sample after 10 minutes, then the trash is accepted into the landfill. Keep rainwater out of the landfill.

Landfills cannot be built in environmentally-sensitive areas, and they are placed using on-site environmental monitoring systems. These monitoring systems check for any sign of groundwater contamination and for landfill gas, as well as provide additional safeguards.
The life cycle of a municipal landfill undergoes five distinct phases, as follows: Initial adjustment (Phase I) Transition (Phase II) Acid formation (Phase III) Methane fermentation (Phase IV) Final maturation and stabilization (Phase V)
Landfills comprise all kinds of wastes that we produce, from plastic bags to glass bottles and other commercial and industrial, and food waste. Besides these, wood wastes, clean asphalt, sand, clay, and construction materials are some acceptable rubbish to be disposed of in landfills.
