If you have breast cancer you should be offered yearly mammograms for 5 years. If you have a family history and are at high risk of another breast cancer you should also have: yearly MRI scans if you are between 30 and 49. yearly mammograms if you are between 50 and 69 and do not have a faulty TP53 gene.
Most women at high risk should begin screening with MRI and mammograms when they are 30 and continue for as long as they are in good health. But this is a decision that should be made with a womans health care providers, taking into account her personal circumstances and preferences.
Women who place a higher value on the potential benefit than the potential harms may choose to begin biennial screening between the ages of 40 and 49 years. For women who are at average risk for breast cancer, most of the benefit of mammography results from biennial screening during ages 50 to 74 years.
The task force says reducing the age of initial screening to 40 could prevent at least one additional breast cancer death for every 1,000 women. This change now creates a more uniform recommendation among all medical societies urging all women to initiate screening at age 40.
Mammography is performed every 1, 2 or 3 years from the age of 4050 years until around 7075, depending on national/regional screening programmes. European guidelines suggest the 2-year interval for the general female population from 50 to 70 years of age [8].

High risk women should have both an annual mammogram and an annual MRI. These can be done on the same date or six months apart, at the patients or providers discretion. It is also important to time the MRI to occur between days seven and 14 of the menstrual cycle to best visualize the breast tissue.
Screening mammograms once every 12 months if the woman is age 40 or older. Diagnostic mammograms more frequently than once a year, if medically necessary.
EUSOBI thus calls on all providers of mammography screening to share density information with the women being screened. In light of the available evidence, in women aged 50 to 70 years with extremely dense breasts, the EUSOBI now recommends offering screening breast MRI every 2 to 4 years.
