Never turn your HRV/ERV off (other than for servicing), it should always be running. Arrange for annual servicing by an accredited contractor. If possible, have your furnace and HRV/ERV serviced at the same time.
To ensure that you home is well-ventilated and maintains good air quality, your HRV and ERV should run continuously. Many HRV fans can operate at low, medium, or high speeds depending on the ventilation requirements.
Filters should be checked every three months and replaced as needed to maintain airflow. Remove filter clips to access filter. Contact your RenewAire dealer for replacement filters. Once a year, vacuum the four core faces using a soft brush.
You want an ERV mainly for the summertime. An HRV in summer time will add humidity to your house. In the winter it will dry your house.
Disadvantages of an ERV include the initial upfront cost and maintenance requirements. It may also be less effective than a heat recovery ventilator in extremely humid or dry climates and may not be cost-effective in mild climates.

If you are not home, I would set the ERV to off. Only run it when you are home as its purpose is ventilation only. If you are in a really tightly sealed house, then run it continuously.
Definitely turn it off to avoid more humidity being delivered into the home.
The exchanger really should not run more than 20 minutes out of the hour as you are causing the furnace to have to run to heat the cold outside air you are drawing in. A better way to keep air fresh is to allow the exchanger to run 20 minutes but keep fan in on position on furnace to keep circulating air.
