A current Health Certificate and a current EIA test must accompany all horses. Horses may enter/re-enter at any port of entry. A duty or sales tax will not be assessed if horse is entering Canada or the US temporarily.
Generally, importers use the services of a customs broker/agent to bring horses and other equids into the United States. Testing requirements while in quarantine apply to all equids: horses, donkeys, mules, asses, zebras. Each horse in the shipment undergoing import quarantine will be tested on the day of arrival.
The horse transportation company will retrieve the horse from the sellers farm and take it to the international airport. The horse will then fly to the United States, and then the horse will quarantine. All horses will quarantine for 72 hours at the U.S. Department of Agriculture sight at the airport the horse lands.
Overall, importing a horse costs between $7500 and $12,000. What about quarantine? Quarantine for geldings and very young horses is 2 - 3 days, and is done at the port of entry into the United States at facilities designated for that purpose.
