Occurrence policies provide the best protection and, though somewhat more expensive than claims made policies, offer long-term peace of mind. Unfortunately, they are becoming increasingly hard to find. Claims made coverage, by contrast, will only apply if the claim is made while the policy is still in effect.
An insurance claim is a formal request from the policyholder to their insurance company asking for payment after a covered incident, such as a hospital stay, a natural disaster, theft, and more.
Unlike occurrence-based policies, which cover events that happen during the policy period, claims-made policies require both the alleged incident and the claim to occur within the policys timeframe. These policies often have a retroactive date. Claims arising from incidents before this date may not be covered.
The claims-made form covers incidents that you report during the active policy period or during an extended reporting period and occur after a policys retroactive start date.
Under a claims-made policy, a claim must be made during the policy period in order for there to be coverage. Under a claims-made and reported policy, both a claim must be made and that claim must also be reported during the policy period. A grace period may apply for claims made late in a policy period.
