What are the costs of copyright registration? A registration in Canada generally entails a fee of $50 when submitted to CIPO online, and a fee of $65 for all other cases. Please refer to CIPOs complete list of fees for copyrights for more information on costs. Can I register copyright under a pseudonym?
How do I register my copyright? To register a work, submit a completed application form, and a nonreturnable copy or copies of the work to be registered. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section Registration Procedures., and Circular 4, Copyright Office Fees. Where can I get application forms?
Protection is granted automatically, without any formality, as soon as the work is created and fixed in any material form. In Canada, copyright is an exclusive federal jurisdiction and is governed by the Copyright Act.
The general rule in case of books is to look whether it is published and in the public domain. If it satisfies both the condition, then it is copyright of the rightful author/publisher and cannot be reused without permission. To check such, find that book and check whom the rights has been assigned in it.
You can obtain a copyright registration by filing an application accompanied by the appropriate fees. Send your completed application by mail to CIPO, or submit it online for a reduced fee. You do not need to include a copy of your work with the application since CIPO does not review or assess works in any way.

To register a claim to copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office, the claimant must: (1) submit a properly completed application; (2) pay a nonrefundable fee; and (3) deposit the required number of copies of the works to be registered.
The U.S. and Canada are both parties to international copyright treaties, however, meaning that works created in one country will be protected in the other country under that countrys copyright laws.
How do you check if something is copyrighted? We found out earlier that every original creative work is copyrighted as soon as its written down or saved in some tangible form. If you want to check registrations, though, you need to use the search engine on copyright.gov.
