2.1 Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) are documents prepared by the manufactures/ suppliers of the chemicals and contain information on physical and chemical properties of the material, potential hazards of the material and how to work safely with these materials.
The ultimate responsibility of producing and making safety data sheets available rests with the manufacturer of the product. They must also ensure that suppliers have access to these and can pass them onto employers. Suppliers must provide safety data sheets to employers who purchase the product.
While there is no specified format for the MSDS, OSHA has developed a non-mandatory format, OSHA Form 174, which may be used by chemical manufacturers and importers to comply with OSHAs Hazard Communication Standard. You are entitled to receive a data sheet from your supplier.
Use of Material Safety Data Sheets ( MSDS s) Employers are responsible for obtaining from suppliers an MSDS for each controlled product used in their workplaces.
By law (see docHub , Chemical classification) suppliers of chemicals must provide an up to date safety data sheet if a substance is dangerous for supply.
