After obtaining your USTA official certification, additional requirements to become an ITA certified tennis official include: (1) testing on ITA rules and procedures; and (2) attending a live, interactive webinar taught by an ITA National Instructor. There is also an annual $60 membership fee.
Officiating pays more than youd think, especially at the college level. A typical day roving at a USTA junior tournament gets you $125-150, plus overtime if needed (with free meals), but in college it goes up to $150-200, plus travel if you have to drive over a certain number of miles.
Chair Umpires Aside from the players, the Chair Umpire is the most important person on court during a match. The Chair Umpire has enormous responsibility during a match, and is responsible for calling the score, enforcing the rules and managing the players.
Payment for each tournament is determined independently. Your chief umpire or referee will know the pay rate. Some tournaments are staffed with volunteers, for example a wheelchair tournament. While in training, you may be unpaid, or paid but at a lower rate than when fully certified.
Officials are required to have completed and passed either a Referee Course or Basic Line Umpire Course or having passed the Court Supervisor Course before they can join as well as having completed a criminal record check in the last 12 months. Once youve passed your course you will be sent details on how to apply.
