Business owners understand OSHAs role in their daily operations, as they set regulations required to keep a business running smoothly including requiring all forklift operators be certified and recertified every three years. For companies caught with expired certifications, fines are hefty!
Background: 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2)(iii) states: All operator training and evaluation shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence.
While OSHA mandates that operators performance be evaluated at least every three years, refresher training is required only if this evaluation identifies a need for it. The need for additional or refresher training is determined by specific circumstances, such as: Assignment to operate a different type of forklift.
Certifies that the operator has successfully completed training and operating of a Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) and is competent to perform all the duties and responsibilities safely. Complies with 29 CFR 1910.178(I)(6) Certification. Valid for 3 years from the evaluation completion date.
OSHA does require that each forklift operators performance be reevaluated every three years, but if the evaluation demonstrates competence, no further training is required.
