The Taku Glacier terminus currently lies about 1.5 km (1 mi) across the Taku River from Taku Point.
These are the Norris, Taku, Hole-in-the-Wall, Twin, and Tulsequah glaciers. Except for the Taku and its distributary, Hole-in-the-Wall, all the glaciers appear to be retreating.
Taku is extremely thick: In fact, it is one of the thickest known alpine glaciers in the world, measuring 4,860 feet (1,480 meters) from surface to bed. It is also the largest glacier in the Juneau Icefield.
The Taku is a tidewater glacier that formerly calved, but is now advancing slowly over its outwash delta. The glacier had a dominantly positive mass balance from 1946-1988 and a slightly negative balance since 1988.

Hubbard Glacier is the largest of eight calving glaciers in Alaska that are currently increasing in total mass and advancing.
Due to the positive mass balance and the fact that it was no longer losing mass to icebergs, Taku Glacier has become insensitive to the warming that has impacted all other glaciers of the icefield. This has driven its advance.
The easiest way is to look a the glacier margins. If the ice is in contact with vegetation or rock covered in lichens or moss, it means it is most likely advancing. If you see a band of life-less rock in between the ice and the first plants/lichens/moss, it means it is retreating.
