The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, also known as the Leech Lake Band of Chippewa Indians or the Leech Lake Band of Minnesota Chippewa Tribe (Ojibwe: Gaa-zagaskwaajimekaag Ojibweg) is an Ojibwe band located in Minnesota and one of six making up the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe.
The first Ojibwe settlements were on small islands on Leech Lake. This area in north central Minnesota was the home of the Mississippi and Pillager Ojibwe bands.
Demographics: As of November 2021, ing to the Tribal Enrollment Office, 10,022 people are enrolled Leech Lake Band members.
The Leech Lake Indian Reservation contains 864,158 acres, including parts of Beltrami, Cass, Hubbard, and Itasca Counties (see location map). It is located in North-Central Minnesota in the Central Pine-Hardwoods Forest ecoregion, a zone of transition between boreal (conifer) forest and deciduous (hardwood) forest.
Eleven communities make up the reservation. In addition to Cass Lake, there are Ball Club, Bena, Inger, Onigum, Mission, Pennington, Smokey Point, Sugar Point, Oak Point, and Squaw Lake.
