Shots are then given every two, three, and eventually four-week intervals. Allergy shots are not given at intervals greater than four weeks with the exception of insect sting allergy, which can be given up to every six weeks.
Epinephrine shots are used to treat a sudden, life-threatening allergic reaction, also called anaphylaxis. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include swelling in the throat and difficulty breathing. Shots to treat anaphylaxis are given with an autoinjector. This device has a self-injecting syringe and needle.
There are about 24 injections that are needed; the maintenance dose is generally reached in about 24 weeks. Once your child is receiving the maintenance dose, allergy visits are then spaced out so they receive the maintenance dose every two weeks, then every three weeks, and finally every four weeks.
Typically, shots are given 1 to 3 times a week. During the buildup phase, the allergen dose is gradually increased with each shot. The maintenance phase generally continues for 3 to 5 years or longer. Youll need maintenance shots about once a month.
This could take approximately 6 injection visits to reach your maintenance dose. Depending on your starting dilution, you will increase the dosage on 3-6 vials of allergen extract before beginning your maintenance dose. The dose will be increased to gradually reduce your sensitivity to your allergies.

Injections are given subcutaneously using a 1-mLsyringe with a 26 or 27 gauge half-inch non-removable needle. Injections should be given in the posterior portion of the middle third of the upper arm at the junction of the deltoid and triceps muscles.
You can use CPT codes 95115 (single injection) and 95117 (multiple injections) to report the allergy injection alone, without the provision of the antigen.
For cluster, patients can choose to receive up to 4 injections from each vial per visit from the first 2 vials and subsequently single injections up to twice weekly. This protocol achieves maintenance dosing in as few as 9 weeks.
