HUBZones are economic zones, not simply geographic locations. For example, there are HUBZones in Fort Polk, LA; Baltimore, MD; Puerto Rico; Alaska; Duncan, OK; and Leesburg, Virginia.
A Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) is an economically distressed area as determined by the Small Business Administration (SBA), based on income and unemployment data. Nationally, HUBZone areas include: 7,000 urban census tracts. 900 rural counties.
The HUBZone Program mission is to promote job growth, capital investment and economic development to historically underutilized business zones, referred to as HUBZones, by providing contracting assistance to small businesses located in these economically distressed communities.
To qualify for the HUBZone program, your business must: Be a small business ing to SBA size standards. Be at least 51% owned and controlled by U.S. citizens, a Community Development Corporation, an agricultural cooperative, an Alaska Native corporation, a Native Hawaiian organization, or an Indian tribe.
In addition, a firm that has less than 20% of its total employees residing in a HUBZone during the performance of a HUBZone contract has failed to attempt to maintain the HUBZone residency requirement.
