To pass the CBEST, one must obtain a minimum scaled score of 41 in each of the three sectionsreading, writing, and mathematics.
Candidates must meet one of the following requirements: Compete a Bachelor of Arts (BS) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program with an embedded CSET waiver. Earn a degree in the desired subject area. Complete the required CTC-approved CSET waiver courses.
Is the CSET still required to teach in California? The CSET is no longer required per se, so long the prospective candidate satisfy alternative requirements with respect to subject matter competence. However the CSET can still be used to demonstrate subject matter competence and earn credential(s).
Teacher candidates no longer have to take the California Basic Skills Test, or CBEST, or the California Subject Matter Exams for Teachers, referred to as CSET to earn a credential. The CBEST tests reading, math and writing skills and is usually taken before a student is accepted into a teacher preparation program.

Retaking the CSET Individuals must pass all of an exams subtests to be qualified to teach their chosen subject. If you did not pass your test or subtests on your first attempt, you must wait 45 days from the date you took a test or subtest or were registered for that test.
Applying for a CBEST Waiver If you need a CBEST waiver, the request (form WV1) must be submitted to the CTC by your employer. Before submitting a request to the CTC, your employer must inform their governing body of the request. The employer must provide your name and the position you will fill through the waiver.
