If the Gross Value of the Estate is under 1m and the majority of assets are transferring to a surviving spouse or civil partner you can use form IHT205. ​If the Gross Value of the Estate is over 325,000 and no assets are being transferred to a surviving spouse or civil partner you will need to use form IHT400.
Overview. Inheritance Tax is a tax on the estate (the property, money and possessions) of someone whos died. Theres normally no Inheritance Tax to pay if either: the value of your estate is below the 325,000 threshold.
Any unused nil-rate band or residence nil-rate band following the death of an individual can be transferred to their surviving spouse or civil partner.
You must send this form to us no later than 24 months after the end of the month in which the deceased died. For example, if the spouse or civil partner died on 15 May 2006, and the deceased died on 10 October 2007, you would need to send this form to us by 31 October 2009.
