The type certificate is a document by which the authority states that an applicant has demonstrated the compliance of a type design to all applicable requirements. This certificate is not in itself an authorization for the operation of an aircraft, which must be given by an airworthiness certificate.
Type certification is the approval of the aircrafts design and all its essential components. In contrast, production certification is the approval to manufacture duplicate products under the type design, and an airworthiness certification signifies that the aircraft meets safety standards for operation.
A Type Certificate (TC) is granted for new aircraft designs, whereas a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) applies to major modifications of existing designs other than the TC holder. Supplemental Type Certificates are essential for major upgrades, like avionics enhancements, without re-docHubing the entire aircraft.
Amended type certificates typically take 3-5 years to complete. By comparison, the certification of a new aircraft type can take between 5 and 9 years.
Certification affirms that FAA requirements have been met. 14 CFR Part 21 defines three separate certifications: type, production, and airworthiness. Type certification is the approval of the design of the aircraft and all component parts (including propellers, engines, control stations, etc.).
