Write in the present tense When you write your running record, remember to use the present tense. All notes taken during observation should be an active description of what is happening at that moment. However, when writing your conclusion based on your observation, you can use past tense.
It is generally short, often only 10 minutes or less. The observer writes down everything possible that the child says and does during a specified length of time or during a designated activity. Record all observed behavior, in great detail: actions, body and verbal language, facial expressions, etc.
Two-Step Process Mark the text on the running record form as the student reads from the Benchmark Passage or Benchmark Book. Before taking your first running record, become familiar with the symbols used to mark a running record form. Use the boxes to the right of the lines of text to gather information.
One example of a running record would be if the text reads The cow jumped over the moon, and the student read The car jumped over the fence, then the student made two errors out of six words. The teacher would record a checkmark, the word car, two more checkmarks, and the word fence on the running record form.
