The responsibility for determining the cause of death remains with the physician, certified registered nurse practitioner or the coroner as provided under this act.
At its February 8, 1996 meeting, the Board reconsidered its 1986 ruling and determined that licensed nurses may pronounce death in the absence of any law to the contrary. However, certification of death must be pursuant to current state law which requires the signature of a physician on the death certificate.
If you have questions, please contact the Archives at 287-5790 or visit the Data, Research and Vital Statistics, Vital Records office at 220 Capitol St. in Augusta. The Vital Records office can also be docHubed via telephone at 287-3771 or 1-888-664-9491.
Confirmation or verification of death can be undertaken by a registered nurse, however you must check your employers policies to determine local agreements about the circumstances in which this can be done. Certification of death requires a registered medical practitioner.
By convention, Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Registered Nurses pronounce death in Spokane County. When death occurs in a private residence, the Medical Examiners Office should not be notified until such pronouncement has occurred.
