A supplemental response is a response that contains newly discovered information and is typically served in response to a supplemental interrogatory. See 7.59. There is no duty under California law to supplement responses unless specifically requested by the propounding party.
(1) A party is under a duty seasonably to supplement the response with respect to any question directly addressed to the identity and location of persons having knowledge of discoverable matters and the identity of each person expected to be called as an expert witness at trial, the subject matter on which each person
an additional answer that is given to alter, add to or to delete answers that have already been given.
Discovery Supplemental Interrogatories If considerable time and/or additional discovery has occurred, a party may ask another party to supplement their original responses with any additional information and/or responses.
A supplemental interrogatory is particularly useful when the responding party has previously responded to interrogatories with a boilerplate response such as response made on advice of counsel or information and belief, discovery is continuing, etc.

Supplemental discovery, seeks to find out what has changed since the initial disclosure to uncover any new information that is crucial to the case. After answering a discovery request, the answering party has a duty to provide further information if the answer later turns out to be inaccurate.
Each supplemental or further response and each amended answer must be identified by the same number or letter and be in the same sequence as the corresponding interrogatory, inspection demand, or admission request, but the text of the interrogatory, demand, or request need not be repeated.
The party must amend or supplement the statement if additional privileged information or material is found subsequent to the initial response. Thus, when large numbers of documents are being produced, a party may amend the initial response when documents are found as to which the party claims privilege.
