The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) collects unemployment insurance taxes from the states liable employers and returns those dollars to eligible Illinois workers as unemployment insurance benefits.
The regular UI program is funded by taxes on employers, including state taxes (which vary by state) and the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax, which is 6 percent of the first $7,000 of each employees wages.
UI benefits are financed by employer payroll contributions and are charged ingly when claimants are determined eligible to collect benefits. Be sure to accurately report information to ensure you receive the benefits you qualify for.
With a few exceptions, only employers contribute to federal and state unemployment programs. The outliers are Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In these states, both employers and employees pay SUTA tax. The FUTA tax rate is 6% of the first $7,000 each employee makes annually, also known as the FUTA wage base.
After you file your claim, you will receive information from IDES in the mail. If your request for benefits has been approved, you will receive an unemployment insurance (UI) finding letter. This letter will describe your benefits and will list the day that you need to call IDES to certify your benefits.
