A physical examination has four components: inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation (Fig. 2-1). Inspection involves a close examination of the injured area looking for deformity, contusions, abrasions, swelling, and bleeding.
In your injury diary, record details like the date, time, and location of the accident. Describe how the accident occurred, your injuries, and any immediate pain levels. Document all medical treatments received, including doctor visits, medications, and therapy sessions.
A primary assessment in first aid is the initial examination or evaluation of a patient by a medical professional or a first responder. The goal is to gain insight into the extent of the injury and provide treatment to stabilize the person. Complete assessment of the scene and the patient is essential after an injury.
Specific assessment of injuries follows the TOTAPS protocol (Talk, Observe, Touch, Active and Passive movement, Skills test), which helps to determine the nature and extent of the injury. This will include working out the type of injury, including which body part is injured, and then how bad this injury is.
Complete a Head to Toe Examination DO NOT let the casualty move their head or neck. Run your fingers gently over the head and neck and look and feel for any bleeding, swelling, or lumps. Look at the face, nose, mouth and ears. Are there any loose or knocked out teeth? Can the casualty talk and move their mouth?
