Megans Law (Public Law 104-145) is the federal law that require(s) the release of relevant information to protect the public from sexually violent offenders. Megans Law was originally enacted in 1996, and is now included in the more expanded sexual offender laws (See Sex Offender Registration and Notification).
In 1996, the of Megan Kanka prompted federal legislation that required all 50 states to make private information about sex offenders available to the general public. Megans Law, known as the Florida Sexual Predators Act in Florida, allows the public to be wary of potentially dangerous predators in their area.
This federal law required that, upon release from prison, individuals who had committed a sexually violent act against a child must register their home and work address with designated local law enforcement, creating a centralized registry in each state.
When you see in violation on Megans Law, it doesnt mean that theyve committed a new offense, a deputy clarified. What it means is that theyve done something and its usually something that regards to the timeline concerning their registration. So if you change your address, you have 5 days to let someone know.
