The Minnesota Fathers Adoption Registry (MFAR) was created for men who believe they have fathered a child, to alert them to adoptions involving their presumed children. Men register information about themselves, their presumed child, and the childs mother.
Unless the fathers parental rights are terminated, you cant adopt the children. In the meantime, you can have your soon to be wife fill out power of attorney, living will and will documents to ensure that if she were to die or become incapacitated, that her wishes (to have you as guardian) are known.
(Evidence of adoption is not available for records established before 2001.) As of July 2024, foreign-born adopted people age 18 or older may request evidence of adoption from MDH. Contact the Office of Vital Records (651-201-5970, health.vitalrecords@state.mn.us) for more information.
As of July 1, 2024, Minnesota law changed to allow access to original birth records by adoptees. An adopted persons access to original birth records is no longer determined by the disclosure preferences of the birth parent(s).
