The Common Core of Data (CCD) is the U.S. Department of Educations (ED) primary database on public elementary and secondary education in the United States. The CCD is a comprehensive, annual, national statistical database of all public elementary and secondary schools and Local Education Agencies (LEAs).
The NCES locale framework is composed of four basic types (City, Suburban, Town, and Rural) that each contains three subtypes. It relies on standard urban and rural definitions developed by the U.S. Census Bureau, and each type of locale is either urban or rural in its entirety.
Public schools, public school districts, and many private schools can be assigned NCES codes. Each code consists of a set of numbers that identify the state, the school district, and the individual school building respectively.
You can also retrieve the new NCES ID for a single LEA or school by looking it up in the Education Unit Profile of ESS by name or State ID. The NCES program office publishes NCES IDs only after they have passed the Match Report for both EDEN and Census.
