The Records Bureau collects, maintains, and distributes reports of crimes, incidents, and other matters of interest to the public and those needed for police operations, as required by law. Records personnel respond to all document requests filed under the Freedom of Information Act.
All reports take approximately five business days to arrive in the Records Division. All police reports (not exempt as specified in Section 13 of P.A. 442 of 1976) must be requested through the Freedom of Information Act, by filling out the Freedom of Information Act form and submitting it to the Records Division.
The law requires law enforcement agencies to provide information the public has the right to know and at the same time, to withhold information if the release would jeopardize an individuals right to privacy. All agency records not exempted by statutory of case law are available.
If you request through the mail, it could take, at a minimum, 10 to 15 business days to receive your police accident report. Requesting online or in person, if allowed, is much faster. In some cases, you may receive the report on the spot or within a few hours of requesting it.
