The 20 Year Letter will be available to the service member approximately 120 days after the close out of the Retention/Retirement (R/R) year and completion of their 20 years of satisfactory service.
For 20 years of service, members receive 40 percent of the average of their highest 36 months of basic pay, rather than 50 percent.

Penalties will increase if the accused has been AWOL for more than 30 days and their absence is terminated by apprehension by military police. Confinement can increase to 18 months, along with forfeiture of pay and allowances and dishonorable discharge.
For example, retiring with 20 years of service means your retirement pension will be 50% of the highest 36-month pay average. Waiting to leave after 40 years will make your pension 100% of your monthly pay average. You may also receive additional payments from your Thrift Savings Plan, if you have chosen to contribute.
