The Peer Observation Tool is based on the Characteristics of Effective Teaching, and this toolkit has been designed to provide instructors with tangible strategies, ideas, and examples of effective teaching practices that are intentionally designed, focused on learning, and supportive of students.
All peer reflections should be anonymised; you should not record the name of the person you reflect with. However, you should say what their professional role is in relation to you. This could include their job title and a short description of how they interact with your role.
For example, a teacher may observe that a number of students are looking out of the window rather than watching the science demonstration, or a teacher may hear students making comments in their group indicating they do not understand what they are supposed to be doing.
Start with factual information like the date, time, and place of the observation. Proceed to write down all observations that you made. Keep these observations straightforward and clear, try not to go off-topic. Make sure that it is organized and easy to understand.
Consider using the observation tool to record the evidence and what you see and hear, as well as queries, celebrations and opportunities. Remain impartial, factual and non-judgemental. Be mindful of your mannerisms and body language during the observation as this can impact on teaching practice and on student learning.
