Almost all your college applications will require counselor recs and up to two teacher recs, but some schools do allow extra recommenders.
Most selective colleges and universities require one to three recommendation letters with your application, usually from your guidance counselor and at least one teacher. Recommendation letters are typically submitted electronically through the school-specific supplements on The Common Application.
Letters of recommendation do three things: I) provide facts about the applicant 2) render a judgment as to the applicants ability and 3) make the applicant come alive, stand out against other applicants so that he or she will be remembered in the decision process.
The best reference is from someone who has high regard for your work, knows you well and is a good writer. Ideally, your reference should be able to evaluate your performance in the same way and in the same language as law schools admissions committee members evaluate students in their program.
It is not necessary for the recommender to address each letter to a specific school. If you are applying to five schools and the content is identical for each letter, the recommender need submit only one letter addressed to Dear Admission Committee. Do not have the recommender submit five separate letters.
Because fall always seems so busy for everyone, I recommend asking for letters of recommendation (LORs) for your law school application during the summer, September at the latest. Make an effort to meet with each potential recommender in person to ask if he or she would be willing to write you a good LOR.
Schools vary on the number of letters of recommendation they require, so make sure to check each schools requirements in LSAC. Typically, two-four letters are required, meaning schools most commonly require two letters but will accept up to four.
Most law programs require two or three reference letters for admission, although they may accept more than just three. While references from faculty members are ideal, law schools may seriously consider nonacademic references as well, especially if applicants have been out of school for several years.
