First, a caveat: Before writing any long document, be sure to acquire the template for it from your instructor, department, or school, especially for theses and disserations. That said, this page numbering technique works for any document regardless of length or complexity. OK. Here we go. Step One: Scroll through your document and determine where the page numbering changes. Most often, the two main sections are: Front Matter and Body. Front matter consists of any page that comes before the Body: Front matter can include the title page, abstract, acknowledgements, table of contents, list of abbreviations, and so on. To ensure your pages begin with 1, go to the Insert tab Page Number. Select Format Page Numbers Page numbering Start at and add 1.
On the Insert tab, within the Header Footer Group, click Page Number and then navigate to Format Page Numbers. On the Format Page Numbers dialog box, select Roman numerals from the Number Format drop-down list. Word replaces the integer numbers with Roman numerals as pages i, ii and iii.
Insert page numbers Select Insert Page Number, and then choose the location and style you want. If you dont want a page number to appear on the first page, select Different First Page. If you want numbering to start with 1 on the second page, go to Page Number Format Page Numbers, and set Start at to 0.
You can add page numbers to the whole document, to specific sections of your document, or starting from a specific page. Open a Google Doc. In the top left, click Insert Page number. More options. Under Apply to, choose where you want to apply the page number change. Click Apply.
On the Format menu, click Document, and then click the Layout tab. Make any changes that you want, and then click Default.
With the number still highlighted, choose Page Number from the top menu, then select Format Page Numbers. Under Page Numbering, choose Start At and then select a starting number. The last step is to go to the top of the document and click on the first page number and then hit delete.
To change the numbering format, go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers. Select the format you want, and then select OK. To change the numbering alignment, go to Header Footer Page Number Page Number.

To choose a format or to control the starting number, go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers. To change the numbering style, select a different style in Number format. To change the starting page number of the newly created section, select Start at, and then enter a number. Select OK.
Create different headers or footers Double-click the header or footer. Select Different Odd Even Pages. On one of the odd pages, select the header or footer area you want to change. Type the document title, and then press Tab twice. Select Page Number Current Position and choose a style. Select an even page.
