Optical illusions that display two different things depending on how you look at them are known as ambiguous images or reversible figures. The duck-rabbit illusion was first published in a German magazine in 1892, then used by Joseph Jastrow in 1899 in his research on perception.
Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that causes people to see patterns in a random stimulus. This often leads to people assigning human characteristics to objects. Usually this is simplified to people seeing faces in objects where there isnt one.
Today, studies suggest our personal experiences play a role in how we see optical illusions. Think of your working memory as your minds eyethe little nuggets of data your brain retains for short periods of time. While these memories may only be temporarily stored in your brain, they influence your perception.
But the problem might not be your angles, it could be lens distortion. Because of the proximity of your face to the camera, the lens can distort certain features, making them look larger than they are in real life. Pictures also only provide a 2-D version of ourselves.
Ambiguous images or reversible figures are visual forms that create ambiguity by exploiting graphical similarities and other properties of visual system interpretation between two or more distinct image forms. These are famous for inducing the phenomenon of multistable perception.
On the other hand, photographs are a 2D representation of ourselves, which can flatten our features and distort our appearance depending on the camera angle, distance, lighting, and other factors. The closer the camera is to our face, the more distorted our appearance can appear, which can be unflattering.
The camera lens is not the human eye Its called lens distortion and it can render your nose, eyes, hips, head, chest, thighs and all the rest of it marginally bigger, smaller, wider or narrower than they really are.
