Like any editor, Vim keeps track of every operation. Press u to undo a last operation, and Ctrl + r to redo it. To learn more about Vims undo tree (Vims undo history is not linear!) and how to navigate it, see chapter 4, Advanced Workflows.
Insert mode Pressing i (for insert) will directly switch to Insert mode. Pressing a (for append) will switch to Insert mode and move the cursor after the current character. Pressing o will switch to Insert mode and insert a new line below the line the cursor is on.
To undo changes in Vim and Vi use the u , :u or :undo commands: If you are in insert or any other mode, press the Esc key to go back to the normal mode, which is also known as command mode. Type u to undo the last change.
Use Vim shortcut Ctrl + c to exit Insert mode and abort current command.
If you are in insert mode, which means youre actively editing text in the file, you can exit insert mode by pressing the Esc key. This will return you to normal mode, where you can enter commands like :wq or :q!.
Undo Changes in Vim / Vi Any character typed in normal mode will be interpreted as a vim command. Press u, :u, or :undo to undo the last change (entry).
To switch from Normal mode to Insert mode, we can press i, a, or o. To switch back from Insert mode to Normal mode, the default key is the Escape key (Esc).
To perform a single undo in Vi, follow these steps: Step 1: Ensure youre in command mode by pressing the Esc key if needed. Step 2: Once in command mode, simply press the u key. After you press u, Vi will revert the file back to its previous state, effectively undoing the last change you made.
