[MUSIC PLAYING] ABBY RANDALL: An Exit Ticket is a short assessment given at the end of class that the students must complete before they can leave class for the day. So on a scrap piece of paper please put your name. These are Exit Tickets. Exit Tickets can be anything from a prepared one or two question little quiz that you've typed up or written, or it can be as simple as throwing a question up on the overhead and giving them scrap paper and having them solve it. They like the routine. They know exactly what to do. They know, at the end of the day, they're going to be held accountable. It's a really quick way for me to assess if students learned the concept of the day. I often use it as the you-do part of guided practice, so once the students have practiced together, and we've done it together, then they are able to show me if they can do it on their own. Exit slips are written student responses to questions teachers pose at the end of a class or lesson. These quick, informal assessments enable teachers to quickly assess students' understanding of the material.
Use Exit Tickets at the end of class to: Check students' understanding by having them summarize key points from the lesson. Verify that students can solve a problem or answer a significant question based on the lesson. Emphasize the essential question for the day's lesson.
A good exit ticket is linked to the objective of the lesson, focusing on one particular skill or concept that students should have understood that day. Exit tickets can pose questions that are multiple choice, short answer, or even a couple of sentences in response to a question.
The Exit Ticket is simply a question posed to all students prior to class ending. Students write their answer on a card or piece of paper and hand it in as they exit. This formative assessment technique engages all students and provides the all-important evidence of student learning for the teacher.
Exit Tickets do not require a grade because students are not expected to have mastered the topic they just learned in class the same day. Instead, the purpose is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of students individually and collectively.
One of the most popular (and over used) closure techniques I have seen is the “Exit Slip” and one that is mentioned in Teach Like a Champion. The idea of the Exit Slip or Exit Ticket is that students need to answer a question in order to leave the classroom.
An exit ticket - also called exit slip - is a sheet of paper or, in BookWidgets' case, a digital widget with questions that each student answers individually at the end of the lesson. The questions can be about the lesson content (what they liked about it, what they remember), or about how they feel after the lesson.
Exit tickets collect feedback on students' understanding at the end of a class and provide the students with an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned. They can be helpful in prompting students to begin to synthesize and integrate the information gained during a class period.
Exit tickets can pose questions that are multiple choice, short answer, or even a couple of sentences in response to a question. Three to five questions make for a good exit ticket, and students should be able to complete the whole thing in just a few minutes at the end of a class period.
"Ticket to leave" (or "exit ticket") is an ideal way to end a class. It can serve a number of purposes: provide feedback to the teacher about the class; require the student to do some synthesis of the day's content; challenge the student with a question requiring some application of what was learned in the lesson.
