Adding a second coat of stain to wood can even out the color to some extent, but it wont drastically alter the hue if the initial application is too light or too dark. Its more effective at enhancing the richness of the color rather than docHubly changing it.
I have worked with wood stain in the past on a BENCH and our BEAMS. The difference here, is I have not re-stained a piece. From this experiment, I can honestly say adding darker wood stain to an already stained piece did work for me.
While yes, you can avoid completely sanding and stripping an old stain finish off of your kitchen cabinets, you will need to do some light sanding as part of this project.
I think one misconception is that you have to strip and sand a piece down to bare wood before you can re-stain it. Sometimes that is necessary, but if you have a piece without much of a topcoat (sealer, poly, etc) and the finish is in good shape, you can go over it with a gel stain.
Product Care Maintenance Test a small amount of the detergent on an unnoticeable part of your shoes to make sure it wont stain them. Use your bristle brush to scrub the shoes with the detergent. Wipe shoes clean with a damp cloth. Allow your shoes to air dry for 24 hours before wearing.
To stain over stained wood, lightly sand the surface to remove the existing finish and create a smooth base. Apply the new stain evenly and finish with a protective topcoat.
The new stain you are applying over the old stain should be compatible. For instance, if its an oil-based stain, apply another oil-based stain. If its a water-based stain, apply another water-based stain. Incompatible stains can lead to poor adhesion or blotchy and uneven finish.
For set-in stains: Use the side of a spoon to scrape off any crusty bits from the fabric. Apply a mild liquid laundry detergent directly on to the stain and rub it in with your fingers. Fill a sink or bucket with cool water and soak the jeans for about 30 minutes. Wring out any excess moisture, and launder as usual.
