Tattoo cover ups work by tattooing a new design over your original, unwanted tattoo. It utilizes elements of the original design to create something entirely new. A tattoo cover up would work well for someone ok with a tattoo in the same spot but wants a fresh new design or to hide the original.
Changing the Hue of Subtle Colors Logically, tattoos done in lighter and subtle colors can be tattooed-over in a deeper darker tones while maintaining the existing design and general aesthetic. This is done in the same vein as a traditional cover-up.
One very reasonable way to deal with a bad tattoo is to have it faded via laser. Fading occurs to the point that it can be covered up with the tattoo you initially desired.
Its important to wait until your tattoo is fully healed before considering a cover up. Covering up a tattoo that is still healing can increase the risk of infection and other complications. Generally, you should wait at least 2-3 months after getting a tattoo before considering a cover up.
In some cases its possible to use shapes, lines, or colors from the previous tattoo, blending the two designs together to create something new and natural. In some cases, however, theres nothing salvageable from the previous design, and the artist will need to use color to completely mask the existing design.
Plan the New Tattoo Pattern Find out if there are ideal colors to include or specific shades you should avoid. Ask if linework is possible, and if so, where it can go in the design. See how large your artist thinks the cover-up will need to be: either roughly the same size as the original tattoo or larger.
Asking your tattoo artist for a breakdown of the ingredients in the ink will definitely save you from developing an allergic reaction or infection. Be wary of shops or tattoo artists who cannot give a solid overview of the ingredients in their ink as well as the brand theyre going to use.
The colors most used in cover up tattoos are blues, browns and blacks. This is simply because they are the best at covering old ink. Pigments like shades of red, yellow and orange often fail to fully conceal preexisting ink, especially if it the shades beneath are too dark.
